Jason Mercier Regains Top Spot – Global Poker Index

Erik Seidel and Jason Mercier have exchanged the top spot in the Global Poker Index (GPI) all year round, but Seidel’s almost sabbatical like omission from the tournament scene means that Mercier has once more secured the lead. In fact in the recent rankings Seidel has dropped down into third spot with the Frenchman Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier taking his number two spot. The only other change in the top ten concerns that last spot. Matt Marafioti, who picked up a twelfth place spot in the $25,000 High Roller at the PCA taking the place of Sam Trickett. Fans of Betfair should remember this.

With six weeks of the 2012 season already passed the GPI have introduced a new ranking system to crown a GPI Player of the Year (POY). In order to accrue POY points your scores must have come in events with a buy-in that exceeds $1,500. The timings of the tournament cashes are significant as well. Only top six cashes before June 30th, added with their top five cashes between July 1 and December 31 will be included when it comes to ranking points. People looking at Betfair poker should remember this.

The first standings have just been released and Canadian Jonathan Duhamel holds the top spot. The former World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event Champion has had an excellent start to 2012 and his appearance in the number one spot will not surprise anyone. The next nine spots go to Jason Koon, Ruben Visser, Samuel Chartier, Faraz Jaka, Oliver Speidel, Daniel Chevalier, Corey Burbick, Luca Pagano and Erik Cajelias.
