Over the years i have played with a number of females, some young, some old (but not that old), and i have come to the conclusion that they can be very cunning creatures indeed.
This i think can lend itself very well to playing poker and basically make them a better breed of player that us meer males.
What have you experienced? Do you agree? Are you happier when being beaten by a female than a male? If so why?

Hmmm, I'm not sure whether to be flattered or offended by the statement that women are cunning thus making them better poker players....
I think that although woman can tend to be more cunning than men, women are far more emotional (generally speaking) which makes them worse poker players i.e. no poker face, bad bluffers and sore loosers all of which are not the qualities that make for a good poker player.
Being a girl it doesnt make a difference whether I win or lose to a male or female. perhaps it it different for men though. |

Disclaimer: I am not misoganistic as a person, I am merely stoking the fires ;) I also might have spelt that wrong.
If women are so much better, then why hasn't a woman won any of the big WSOP or WPT events? I know that each field is made up of a predominantly male field, but even then, I think there's only been 4 women to make final tables of the WPT in the first 3 seasons (excluding the female only events). Considering there were about 180 final table slots available over those three seasons, it seems strange that so few women made it.
What do we think?

Hmm, this is quite an interesting topic.
As a female I can say yes we can be very cunning and I have found that in GENERAL we are better at changing gears and we do tend to tilt less. So, while we MAY be more emotional than men in life, we are able to compartmentalize our emotions and not let it affect our game as much. I say in GENERAL because there are always exceptions and I would hate for people to think that I am sexist. Women are also not as prone to the rants and taunts that you see online all the time. Live as well. You always hear about "the mouth" or "the poker brat" - how many nasty attitude women do you hear about?
As for why there hasn't been a female winner yet - look at the numbers. At this point there are as many women online as there are men. But in live games it is still primarilty men, though that is changing. I'll go out on a limb here and predict that within 3 years we will have a female winner in a major live event.
Becasue the stigma of a pro gambler has changed, more people overall are now able to play without their families and friends asking if they are nuts. When I was growing up cardrooms were dark smoky places with characters who were "less than savory" so to speak. Now the average college kid and lone females can be comfortable in a cardroom. That has changed the face of the game immensely. |

I will have to agree here. Women are more cunning and I think it was makes us a better opponent. Though in live events you rarely see a woman player. You might see one or two never as many as there actually are. I know quite a few woman who love to play poker and are great at it. I do hope to see more female players out there on the circuit in the near future. |

Whoa. I didn't know we had some many females on board here. Great to see. Thanks very much for your input everyone. I was a little unsure if anyone would be offended by my question but i am glad you embraced it in the way it was intended.
Bringing poker out of the smokey men’s clubs and bringing it online was always going to be a great leveller and i am all up for that.
Basically i see poker as being one of the true unisex sports around. (yes - your damn right sport. If chess can be a sport so can poker!)
To be honest i don't mind who i play. I'll take money from anyone :-)
Was it Phil Hellmuth who said "When i sit down at a poker table, I’ll bust my own granny to make sure i win." Amen to that Phil - you granny hater!

Amen to that, although I'm not a Helmuth fan. I see the women players are as ruthless as men and they take the game just as seriously. I also see that pros don't take relationships into account when they play - look at Howard Lederer and Annie Duke. Brother and sister and they played together and if memory serves Annie took Howard out. It has not affected their relationship off the felt at all. And anyone who doesn't think poker is a sport should stop to look at the strategy and psychology onvolved in the game - not to mention the stamina it takes to make through some of these events where you are sometimes playing for days - LONG days. |

My other half and I have played together in many - online, organized league and home games. We agreed long ago (back when he was teaching me the finer points of the game) that on the table we would play our own hands and our own strategies and we'd leave the competition on the table. Since I am home more I play more than he does and my strategy had radically diverged from his. We do usually try to start games on separate tables though, it is easier that way...lol Is it ruthless to take your mate out of a hand or a game? No. Poker just shows an even playing field we have different strengths and weaknesses. Use what you have. I have to admit though, that I have found that men tend to be more aggressive and women tend to be more.. sneaky I guess. I think it's funny too, because when I go into a game with people I haven't played with online before, and I play my tight but somewhat agressive game I am often mistaken for a male player and I have seen male players play a sneakier strategy game and they are mistaken for women. |

I have found that women are a little more sneaky or underhanded than men. Although most of the guys I play with are more aggressive. I do agree that in poker there are mulitple strength and weaknesses. Whether you are a male or a female any can take the pot. I have played against some really good female players and some really bad male players. |

Since woman are naturally better at everything, then yes!
I think that poker is an individual game and that anyone can become the best. My personal thinking is that a women hasn't won yet because most women aren't taking the time to play seriously. Percentage wise, there's just a bigger pool of men to draw the winner from. |

As a woman, I would say yes. But, looking at statistics, the answer would more than likely be know. There are many more professional men players than women. Women are too emotional to play good. |

I think women in general are better with money when it comes to gambling. I think there are more men that become addicted. I know there are more professionals that are men, but eventually there will be more women. I think until in the last couple of decades, gambling wasn't considered ladylike. |

It depends how much she wants to get the men around her to buy into whatever attitude she's selling. She can pretend to know it all and intimidate them. or she can bluff and scare them. |

I heard a rumor that 2 big Hollywood stars known to be big buddies were getting the rep of playing and using signals with each other. I think it would be a great screenplay to show how women use the images men have in their minds about women to win at poker. |

Well, I guess there's a good way to test our theories, which is to have a Boys v Girls poker night :) Are there enough of us in the London area for instance?
It could be a lot of fun, and I am sure it will help us add a few more pages to this thread...

I would like to say women are better at poker, but women are definately more emotional players so they could give away their hands. I hope more women start playing, I am working on it and would love to sit at a professional table. |

I have noticed that there are a lot of good threads buried in the depths of PokerDIY poker forums.
Are females better than men?
Some females are better than some men. For the most part I think men men the big tournaments more often because there are more men playing. There are some really good female poker players that can certainly beat me. There are just a lot more men that are great poker players. |
