In the past I've made a point of not giving away any information that I don't need to so if there is now obligation for me to show my hand I don't. However, I was watching poker on TV recently and a guy showed his hand when there was no need (he'd won unopposed). I can't remeber what he had (it was late and I may have been quenching my thirst earlier). Does anyone have any advice or opinions on why he did this, whether it was a good idea and in what cases.

I normally do not show my hands when not necessary. The thing about people that are playing on TV is that if they may show their cards every now and then just because in a few weeks or months when the show is aired after it is filmed everyone will be able to see what the player had. Another thing to consider is that someone may show their cards whether or not they were bluffing or not & this may help them with their strategy later because people may think they are still bluffing.

That's a fair point regarding the fact they'll be watching the coverage of the game at some point. I got the impression form the commentators that it wasn't that unusual a thing to do (I've never seen it before though) although in this case they though it was the wrong decision. I wish I could remember the cards. Has anyone seen this happen before in tournament poker?

I've noticed it a time or two, and while it's sort of interesting at the moment, I don't think it does much for your game in the long run. I never reveal unless I have too! |

I agree, I don't think I'll pursue this. Thanks for the input.

I have made it a habit to never reveal unless I have to. There are times when I have managed to bluff my way through a few hands. My friends have no idea which ones I have bluffed through unless I had to show my hand. I never saw the point in doing it if it has no bearing on the actual hand. I can understand it for tv before it is going to be aired anyway later. |

I saw a celebrity poker show last night which had one of the most laughable and silly scenarios I've seen in a while. All but two fold after the flop. One guy had a jack and queen of hearts. One guy had a two and four mixed. On the flop, there was a king of hearts, and a ten of clubs. The guy with the low cards did a nice raise and the guy with the decent hand folded. I'm like ..What? |

Last night, I was playing online for a while, and made a concerted attempt to fold weaker hands before having to show them. I noticed after an hour or so that it was really working in my favor as a psychological thing. |

I don't reveal my hand. Majority of people don't. It can show your weakness. Especially don't show your hand if you are playing high stakes with your real money. As far as home games, we always show, but we aren't ever playing for more than 50.00-100.00. |

I like to settle this questin at home before the table starts to play. Lots of times it's fun to see wha the other cards were. But to guard against counting (even from friends) I like to lay a couple cards out of the light for a deck. Then it really does feel like fun more because it's luck. |

One rule apply. DON`T SHOW until its in youre tactics, I never show my cards until its time for me to play newbie style. Gets the show on the run. Got a few bucks showing some hands. Cause they thoght i wouldn`t call some raises.lol |

I agree to never show cards voluntarily, but sometimes, f.ex. if u´ve made a very very nice bluff u might show them ;) |

Thanks for all the posts. Since my original I've shown my hand in the hopes of giving a certain impression and then playingon that later. The problem I have found though is that while occassionally you can make a big win because of doing it, just the right cards and situation have to arise so I have decided it isn't a good idea as a tactic in itself because it works so rarely. |

IF you've taken down 6 straight pots... then maybe showing your hand (if you had a monster ) on the 6th hand might be a good idea...
personally I don't really see much benefit to showing a bluff |

I don't reveal a hand unless I feel it will help me later on. For example, I may want to show a bluff to show a certain type of player that I'm capable of bluffing, so when I have a big hand I can make a similar bet and possibly get that same person to call.
At times, I may not want to show the bluff in certain situations to make the person wonder. Try to get them off their game not knowing what I had.
So it depends on what types of players I play against if I show or not. |

I only show rarely, because it gives away too much information about my game. I'll show if I have quads or a boat or a big hand most times. |

This is another one of those things where you have to be absolutely sure what you are doing before you can make a real success of it. You're giving information away, so you should only give away what presents the table image you are trying to create.
I was talking to a friend about this last week and he came up with a point that made me consider whether there was ever any point in worrying about this sort of thing with online play anyway.
So many people are multi-tabling that they won't even see the little things that you do, any effort to create a table image would be futile. In fact your image will be purely down to the stats gven by software like poker-tracker or sites like sharkscope. |

On a related note: I was playing on a table the other night where, if you won a pot and didn't show the hand a lot of the players would ask what hand you had. I normally would say something like "Call if you want to find out what I had", but I didn't want to spoil the good friendly atmosphere at the table, so I just outright lied! Most of the players had had a few drinks so I got away with it. Trev |

i never show my hands good or bad, bluff or not
information is so valuable that yo do not want to play with it ...
eventually if you get a walk with AA then you can show it but that's no information it's just fun |
