I have a theory that the best poker face is no poker face at all.  The only way you can really get this to work is if really know the game and you are in it to have fun.  When I make jokes during hands and look like I'm enjoying myself I think it honestly confuses the crap out of most people.  I think most people come into the game expecting to be decieved and don't know what to do when they are presented with someone who doesn't appear to be hiding anything.  I'll wait until someone calls me a liar to elaborate further.

Yes, I find if I play it nonchalant the entire game, it is highly unnerving. It helps that I am a female and often other players will assume that I am a poor player.

I believe that you just to keep yourself in control until you feel comfortable with both your game and the people you are playing with, otherwise it feels like you are in the wrong place and the wrong moment, either joking or just trying to show off your poker skills.

That's exactly my point.  I think everyone gets caught up in the idea they have to be in control of everything all the time, themselves especially.  I see so many miserable faces at poker tables I just want to pat them on the back and be like "Hey Man, it's a game.  Everything is going to be OK."

Ha, that's a good point! It is a game, and after all why do we play a game of *chance* (and skill) unless we have a little fun while doing it.

I would never say we should change poker's name to something like fun, that would just be silly, but I will say that fun is the name of the game.

This is a true fact! We are often so concerned on rules, etiquette and other aspects of the game that we forget it is all about fun.

Well, poker isn't entirely chance. There is skill to it too. But, skill doesn't come instantly - it takes practice, and practice means losing some of the time.

That's so true. I don't mind playing with newbies who are learning as long as they aren't silly about it. If a newbie sits down at a table and doesn't act half way serious, I want them out of there LOL.

If I don't think I can keep a good poker face I tend to laugh a lot, especially if someone is trying to work out if I'm bluffing and whether to call an all in.

I think that's why I like Daniel Negreanu. He always seems to be having a great time at the poker table. Well, most of the time he does. He's always talking and sometimes laughing and joking, telling stories. He would be fun to play poker with.
