Poker timers make the game move much cleaner and since everyone has a computer the softwear times make running a game really easy.  I use Poker Tournament Manager.  It is by far the best, but you do have to buy it.

Try awarding points through the year based on finish.  Then play a freeroll at the end of the year with chips = final points earned through year.

In Canada each location has differnt rules, but for home games they are TYPICALLY legal provided the house is not taking a rake.  You will need to read the law for your area to be sure, however.

You should have a timer and if any player calls for the clock, the acting player should have 30 - 60 seconds to act of his hand is folded  Since we started using one, the game has picked up.

I used to get about 3 or 4 games out of a regular plastic deck aand then went with Kopag.  I have been using the same pairs of decks for a year.
